Ayase Chihaya is a lighthearted tomboy who's not especially good at anything. Her dream has always been for her sister, an aspiring model, to become the number one beauty in Japan. Everything changes when she meets the quiet and unassuming transfer student, a boy named Wataya Arata who happens to be an incredibly talented karuta player. After playing a game of karuta with her, Arata tells Chihaya that he thinks she has great potential. As Chihaya begins to pursue her new dream of becoming Japan's best karuta player, she is eventually forced to part ways with her friends shortly after graduating from elementary school. Now in high school, Chihaya continues to play competitive karuta in the hopes that she will one day be reunited with her friends.
