Kagome is a modern Japanese high school girl. Never the type to believe in myths and legends, her world view dramatically changes when, one day, she's pulled out of her own time and into feudal Japan through her family's shrine's well! There, in Japan's ancient past, Kagome discovers more than a few of those dusty old legends are true, and that her destiny is linked to one legendary creature in particular--the half dog-demon half human called Inuyasha! That same trick of fate also ties them both to the Shikon Jewel, or "Jewel of Four Souls."
While fighting a demon, Kagome accidentally breaks the jewel into countless pieces, spreading them all across the country. She and InuYasha make it their goal to find all the pieces and put them back together. (Although InuYasha want's the jewel for himself at first, to turn himself into a full-fledged demon.) Along the way, the pair meet Shippo, a young fox demon, Miroku, a not so well behaved monk, and Sango, a powerful female demon slayer. As they strive to find the pieces of the Shikon jewel, they also discover that they have a common enemy: Naraku, an evil demon who is also trying to put together the jewel for his own demonic purposes. As Kagome, InuYasha, Shippo, Miroku, and Sango search for the jewel, they come across many demons who also want the jewel, even if it's just a piece, because even just one small peice holds enormous demonic power...
In 2002 Inuyasha won the Shogakukan Manga Award for best sh?nen title of the year.
